Frequently Asked Questions

Is Keys for Kids a 501(c)3 charity organization?

No. KFK is a charitable initiative co-founded by Ben Folds and his manager Mike Kopp that raises awareness and secures resources for North Carolina nonprofits that provide free or affordable piano lessons to interested youth. Ben wanted to ensure his efforts did not compete with existing nonprofits, but rather support their existing programs.

Why is my donation directed to the North Carolina Arts Foundation?

Keys For Kids has created a statewide network of nine nonprofit partners that are providing free or affordable access to piano and keyboard lessons for school-age youth throughout North Carolina. As resources are available, partners are receiving funding, keyboards, and access to branding materials to support their efforts. The North Carolina Arts Foundation works directly with each nonprofit partner, and therefore, donations are given directly to them and labeled to be used for Keys for Kids.

How are the North Carolina nonprofit partners chosen?

Organizations that have a track record of providing free or subsidized arts education instruction for school-age youth will be considered to participate in the Keys for Kids network. Once selected by the North Carolina Arts Foundation and the North Carolina Arts Council, network organizations will receive support to be used specifically for instruction of piano and keyboard to low-wealth students who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

How many kids are impacted each year by Keys for Kids?

Currently working through nine existing nonprofits that service both rural and urban areas of North Carolina, hundreds of young people are receiving music lessons throughout the year. Some receive their lessons in schools, while others are taught at nonprofit centers.

Is my donation to Keys for Kids tax-deductible?

Yes. All donations are received by the NC Arts Foundation, which is 501(c)3 charitable organization.
